Integrated Family Health Initiative

Innovating at the front-lines to improve the coverage & quality of RMNCH health services

With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Integrated Family Health Initiative (IFHI) is supporting the Government of Bihar (GoB) in improving family health outcomes across the state as well as building GoB leadership and ownership towards these services. The project’s goal is to increase the universal coverage and the quality of life-saving interventions and improve the health and survival of women, newborns and children during the first 1,000 days - from conception to the child’s second birthday.

To do this, IFHI implemented a set of core, proven interventions, spanning the family health continuum of services - maternal, newborn, nutrition, immunization and family planning (see figure below), and pilot tested several innovations. The interventions were initially implemented in 137 blocks of eight high-risk districts and scaled-up to the remaining 30 districts after two years.

CARE has also been identified as the lead partner in the formation of a Technical Support Unit to the GoB under India’s RMNCH+A program. Through this partnership CARE provides support to the GoB to transform institutional capabilities, systems and processes, and importantly expand the use of proven solutions and tools, in order to catalyze rapid and sustainable reduction maternal and infant mortality.

IFHI and the Technical Support Unit are supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and are part of the broader Ananya consortium.
