The PEMN project, funded by the Tides Foundation with money from Google, was implemented from 2011 – 2013 in the Mopti Region, Mali. It aimed to evaluate the value-added of a systematically designed Social Analysis and Action approach integrated with maternal health interventions. Basic maternal health strengthening activities were implemented in two districts, while interventions to target couple communication, family decision making around maternal health care, distribution of household tasks and roles, and the role of husbands in pregnancy were implemented in one district. Specifically,these themes were addressed through facilitation of reflective dialogue in counseling sessions with couples, birth planning sessions with extended families, community involvement in identifying and tracking pregnant women, and encouraging husbands’ participation in pre-natal and delivery services.
