Topic 1: Minimum Initial Services Package (MISP) REQUIRED
The MISP is a coordinated set of life saving activities designed to: prevent and manage the consequences of sexual violence; prevent excess maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality; reduce HIV transmission; and plan for comprehensive RH services beginning in the early days and weeks of an emergency. The MISP is a standard in the SPHERE Minimum Standards in Disaster Response as well as in the Inter-agency Standing Committee (IASC) Health Cluster tools and guidance.
  • After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
    • Define and understand each component of the MISP;
    • Understand the importance of addressing RH as a core part of overall health response and health sector/cluster coordination;
    • Understand the role and functions of the RH lead agency/officer within the health sector/cluster;
    • Be able to provide information on how to order MISP supplies internationally or obtain them locally;
    • Know the most important things for the health sector/cluster to do in a humanitarian crisis to prevent and respond to sexual violence;
    • Understand the best ways to reduce maternal and newborn death and disability at the onset of an emergency;
    • Be able to plan for comprehensive RH programming services integrated into primary health care (PHC) as the situation permits; and
    • Ensure contraceptives are available to meet demand; that syndromic treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is available to patients presenting with symptoms.In addition, the MISP will ensure that culturally appropriate menstrual protection materials are distributed to women and girls.

Topic 2: Family Planning 101 RECOMMENDED
More than 200 million women in the developing world will enter their reproductive years during the next decade. In the future, as in the past, family planning (FP) will help save the lives of countless women and children, and will help alleviate poverty, reduce stress on the environment, and ensure that families are better able to feed, clothe, and educate their children.
  • After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
    • Describe the benefits of FP
    • Define the unmet need for FP
    • Describe key attributes of FP methods
    • Describe the FP guidance provided by the World Health Organization (WHO)
    • Describe most common short-acting methods of FP
    • Describe most common long-acting and permanent methods of FP
    • Discuss quality of, and access to, FP services
    • Describe several key FP service delivery tools
    • Describe FP considerations that are unique to the client with HIV, the postpartum client, the post abortion care (PAC) client, and the client who needs emergency contraception

Topic 3: Managing gender-based violence programs in emergencies RECOMMENDED
Sexual and other forms of gender-based violence can escalate during an emergency in which women and adolescents are separated from their families and communities, increasing their vulnerability to be attacked. Breakdowns in law and order and other social norms provided to protect people also lend to the increase risk of GBV. This course is to improve the knowledge of program managers to better address the issue of gender-based violence in humanitarian emergencies.
  • After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
    • Understand the definition, causes, and consequences of GBV
    • Learn about the framework for addressing GBV in emergencies
    • Preventing GBV in emergencies
    • Responding to GBV in emergencies

Topic 4: Decreasing maternal mortality RECOMMENDED
Maternal mortality and disability continues to be a major public health problem globally, affecting millions of women, families, and communities annually.
This course will help you understand: the current situation of maternal mortality and disability globally, some high impact interventions for reducing maternal mortality and disability, and key issues involved in programming to improve services and save lives.
It is hoped that the issues and program considerations address in this course will bring guidance to program and technical advisors working to reduce the tragic number of maternal deaths in our world.
  • After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
    • Understand the background and concepts related to maternal health, including the maternal mortality ratio, lifetime risk of maternal death, the regional distribution of maternal mortality, and causes of maternal and newborn mortality
    • Describe the impact of saving mothers' lives on the health and survival of children and entire families
    • Discuss the behavioral, clinical, and health systems interventions that can reduce maternal morbidity and mortality
    • Understand the barriers to accessing essential and emergency obstetric care and methods for reducing those barriers in maternal health programming
